For the traveller with a thirst for history, the unique history and heritage of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region can be discovered through its many museums.
The Museum of Mediterranean Cultures (Kasbah Museum) is in a historic part of Tangier. The museum's layout and collection have recently been upgraded, and take one on a journey back in time through Tangier and its region, from prehistory up to the nineteenth century.
The journey continues at the American Legation Museum (TALIM), which presents the history of the city as seen through the eyes of the artists who have lived there.
The Musée de la Fondation Lorin is also in Tangier. Originally a synagogue, it explores the city's past through vintage photographs.
At Tetouan, the Archeological Museum houses archeological finds from all over northern Morocco, connecting visitors with the region's history and culture. There is also another archeological museum at Larache, housed in the Château des Cigognes (Storks' Castle), with its important collection drawn from nearby archeological sites.
In the heart of Chefchaouen's kasbah, the town's Ethnography Museum shows us the way of life in former times through embroidery and musical instruments. Returning to Tetouan, there is a wonderful collection of contemporary art at the Centre of Modern Art in the town's majestic former railway station.
