Potholing is becoming one of the best ways to discover the area of Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima.
There are a large number of caves and galleries to be explored, with different levels of difficulty and routes. As always with this sport, you are strongly recommended to rely on a specialist guide, inform the local authorities and take the necessary equipment.
To get started, there are many caves on the coast, and one can even practise potholing in some of them. But the star of caving in the region is to be found inland, in the galleries of the Kef Toghobeit cave in the natural park of Talassemtane surrounding Chefchaouen. This cave, which has been explored since the 1950s, is at an altitude of 5,500 feet, and is more than 2 1/2 miles long and 2,500 feet deep. It's believed to be the deepest in Morocco and the third deepest in Africa.
Offering a complete, technical circuit, there are many verticals walls, chambers and steps. It is recommended to make the trip over more than one day.
